A Rs. 40,000 order is not a Rs. 499 order with a bigger number on the invoice. The customer is more anxious, the consequences are larger for both sides, and the handling should reflect that from the moment you pick the box. The controls - declared value, cover, tamper-evident packing, OTP at the door, a pack-out record - take an afternoon to set up and then run themselves.

Declare the Value, and Know Exactly What Cover Does

Declare the real invoice value on every high-value shipment. An under-declared parcel is not cheaper; it is a parcel with no basis for a claim.

Delhivery Protect is optional cover for loss and damage to shipment contents within the network, pickup through delivery, including RTO shipments. Cover is capped at Rs. 30,000 per shipment or the declared value, whichever is lower. Pricing runs 0.25% to 0.60% of invoice value depending on category and value, deducted from your wallet on a prepaid basis at pickup.

Worked example: a Rs. 20,000 watch at 0.40% is Rs. 80. Put that Rs. 80 into your cost-to-serve for the category and price it in, the same way you price a payment gateway fee, rather than deciding order by order whether today's parcel feels risky.

Above the cap, be deliberate. On a Rs. 45,000 consignment cover tops out at Rs. 30,000 and you carry the balance - which may change how you pack it, or whether that price band is one you are ready to sell online at all.

Packaging for Protection and Proof

For high-value goods, packaging has a second job: making interference obvious to the person opening the box.

●        Tamper-evident boxes for items around Rs. 7,000 and above.

●        5-ply corrugated over 4 kg or for fragile goods; 3-ply only for lighter, non-fragile items.

●        Cushioning so contents cannot shift. A watch box rattling inside a carton arrives scuffed.

●        Centre-seam sealing, and H-taping on heavier shipments with pressure-sensitive BOPP tape.

●        The label on a flat face away from seams, so it stays scannable.

Then record the pack-out: photographs or a short video showing the item, the serial or IMEI, the box being sealed, and the label pasted with the waybill in frame. Keep it against the order number for the length of your return window. Twenty seconds per order separates a claim you can evidence from an argument about what probably happened.

OTP Verification Works Best When Expected

OTP-verified delivery hands the parcel over only to someone who can produce the code sent to the registered number. For jewellery, phones and premium goods, make it standard.

It works smoothly only if the customer knows in advance. Say it in the confirmation and repeat it in the out-for-delivery message: the code arrives on the number they gave you, is read out to the executive at the door, and nobody else at home can receive it without it. Customers who are told arrange to be present. Those who are not treat the code as suspicious and turn the parcel away.

For a high-value COD order, confirm before dispatch too - the item, the exact amount, and that the full sum must be ready at the door, since it cannot be split across payment modes.

Set Clear Communication Rules Before Delivery

Indian buyers are routinely targeted by fake delivery messages: a missed-attempt notice, a small "redelivery fee" payment link, a call asking for an OTP to confirm an address. Someone waiting on an expensive parcel is the likeliest to click. Getting ahead of it protects both your customer and your delivery experience. Put a short, unchanging paragraph in every confirmation and on the tracking page.

●        Messages about this order come from [your sender name] only. The delivery executive may call from a masked number.

●        Nobody from us or from the delivery partner will ask you for an OTP, a UPI PIN, card details, or an app install to confirm your address.

●        The delivery OTP is spoken to the executive at your door, never entered on a website or sent over chat.

●        A prepaid order is never followed by a payment request, and there is no redelivery fee.

●        Track only through the link in our messages.

Use the same wording every time. Repetition is what makes the genuine message recognisable.

If Something Does Go Wrong

Handle the customer and the claim on separate clocks. Replace or refund on your own timeline; never make the buyer wait on a claim. Claims are raised in Loss and Damages Claims, and auto-created for covered shipments lost in the network. For damage, your pack-out photographs, the invoice and the waybill are the file. Fee disputes must be raised within two days; valid ones are credited within thirty days.

Checklist for Your Next High-Value Shipment

1. Set a value threshold - Rs. 7,000 is a sensible start - above which tamper-evident packing and a pack-out record are mandatory for every order.

2. Price cover into every SKU in the category instead of deciding order by order.

3. Turn on OTP-verified delivery above that threshold and explain it in your confirmation message.

4. Publish the "how we will contact you" paragraph on your tracking page and confirmations, and review high-value shipments and open claims for ten minutes every week.
